An Ancient Roman Mosaic Unveiled in Britain’s Oldest Town

In a fascinating intersection of history and modernity, a captivating discovery has come to light in Colchester, the oldest recorded town in England. This astonishing find is none other than an ancient Roman mosaic that was originally unearthed in 1988 but remained hidden beneath the pavement of a shopping mall for over thirty years. Recently, efforts have been initiated to carefully excavate and display this remarkable artifact to the public.

The journey of this mosaic is nothing short of captivating. During the construction of a shopping mall in 1988, workers unexpectedly uncovered the mosaic. However, due to financial constraints, they were only able to document it before burying it once again. For decades, shoppers unknowingly traversed over this piece of Roman heritage, unwittingly treading upon history beneath their feet as the mosaic lay dormant beneath what would eventually become a vape shop.

The ongoing excavation has already yielded exciting discoveries, shedding light on sections of the mosaic that were previously unseen or unknown. With plans set to finalize the excavation by late summer 2024, the mosaic is slated to be prominently displayed under protective glass in Red Lion Yard.

This revelation not only provides a glimpse into the rich historical tapestry of Colchester but also serves as a testament to the enduring allure of ancient civilizations. As visitors flock to witness this ancient Roman mosaic in all its splendor, the narrative of its unearthing and resurrection adds a layer of intrigue and wonder to the already vibrant history of Britain’s oldest town.
